545 People Responsible for it All

545 People Responsible for it All

Charley Reese (born January 29, 1937) is a syndicated columnist known for his plainspoken manner and conservative views. He was associated with the Orlando Sentinel from 1971–2001, both as a writer and in various editorial capacities. King Features Syndicate distributed his column, which was published three times a week.

One of Charley’s more memorable quotes: "But regardless of whose fault it is, most politicians today are not human beings. You want to pry open their mouths and shout into the darkness, ‘Hello! Is there a human being in there?’ Buried under all that lust for office, all that fear of offending a contributor? I know there must be." (Conservative Chronicle, September 8, 1993, p. 17)

An article written by Reese for the Orlando Sentinel newspaper on March 7, 1985 under the title Looking For Someone To Blame? Congress Is Good Place To Start was widely read and distributed in modified form via e-mail during 2008 United States presidential campaign under the title The 545 People Responsible for America’s Woes. The article commonly forwarded in 2008 was slightly modified from the 1980s version, substituting Pelosi for Tip O’Neil and adding a reference to Iraq. It is not clear if the modifications were made by Reese, as the e-mail claimed. Quote from the original 1985 article:

"One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme Court justices — 545 human beings out of the 235 million — are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country."

He wrote a similar article in 1983, listing 546 people, including the Vice President in that version.

On August 30, 2008, Reese wrote his final column, citing health reasons for his retirement.

Here with all respect to the great Charley Reese is his original article.  It is immediately followed by the email version which has grown in size with undocumented statistics and accusations.

THE 545 PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF AMERICA’S WOES

By Charley Reese

This article was taken from the Orlando Sentinel Star newspaper

"Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does. You and I don’t write the tax code. Congress does. You and I don’t set fiscal policy. Congress does. You and I don’t control monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme Court justices – 545 human beings out of the 235 million – are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered but private central bank.

I excluded all but the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it.

No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislation’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

A CONFIDENCE CONSPIRACY

Don’t you see how the con game that is played on the people by the politicians? Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of Tip O’Neill, who stood up and criticized Ronald Reagan for creating deficits.

The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it. The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating appropriations and taxes.

O’Neill is the speaker of the House. He is the leader of the majority party. He and his fellow Democrats, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto.

REPLACE SCOUNDRELS

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 235 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts – of incompetence and irresponsibility.

I can’t think of a single domestic problem, from an unfair tax code to defense overruns, that is not traceable directly to those 545 people.

When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair. If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red. If the Marines are in Lebanon, it’s because they want them in Lebanon.

There are no insoluble government problems. Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take it.

Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exist disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation" or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people and they alone are responsible. They and they alone have the power. They and they alone should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses – provided they have the gumption to manage their own employees."

Here is the more notorious email version which we originally posted.  The error was pointed out to me recently by my favorite "Junior Pointer Outer"…my one and only favorite brother Jeff!  Thank you Jeff for keeping me straight.  I know it is a full time job.  Now you can appreciate why Mom was always so busy!  :)

Good day to all of you! I just received this email from a longtime friend and classmate in high school. Read this slowly, let it sink in, VOTE in November

This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be please read the entire article. The article below is completely neutral, not anti republican or democrat..

Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day.

It is long but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!
545 vs. 300,000,000

545 PEOPLE – By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The president does.

You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace
545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red ..

If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it’s because they want them in IRAQ.

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no unsolvable government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Insensitivity

Total Insensitivity

Folks, I have stayed on the sidelines since 9/11 and kept my mouth shut. I have watched as every form of terrorism has been ignored as socially repressed individuals giving up, as oppressed individuals expressing themselves, as mistreated individuals having their freedom of speech and freedom of action impinged upon. I have watched as the president of this once great country bowed before a foreign king. I have watched as our president refused to show respect to the American flag for which so many have given their lives. I have watched as our president has renounced Christianity and all of its special days but gladly upheld and celebrated Muslim holidays all the while denouncing that he is in fact Muslim.

I watched as nearly 3,000 human beings died a violent and terrible death in the towering infernos. I have watched the dust caked tears of volunteers dig with their bare hands in the wreckage until their hands were but a bloody pulp. I have watched as brothers and sisters of many nationalities and faiths came together to search for survivors and mourn the loss of loved ones and friends on that horrible day.

I have watched as a steady army of illegal aliens have moved rapidly across our south western borders, murdering American citizens in their haste to gain access to prosperity and the ‘free life’ while big government threatened and harassed anyone who tried to take any action to protect their homeland. Silly ninnies. Read your constitutional law. Only one court in the entire United States of America has the authority to challenge the rulings of any state on maters of state and that is the Supreme Court. No other.

And now the greatest test to date. They are arguing over the constitutional rights and the religious rights of the Muslims to build their mosque near ground zero. They argue of the rights of a businessman to utilize his property in any manner that he wants within the law (but citizens of Arizona are not extended the same freedoms). Take all of the federal law out of the equation. Take all of the religion out of the equation. Take all of the different opinions out of the equation. You are left with just one point of contention. To build the new Muslin mosque/civic center anywhere near the site of the 9/11 disaster is just plain INSENSITIVE. Go to Merriam-Webster.com and you will find this written as the preferred definition of insensitivity:

1 a : not responsive or susceptible <insensitive to the demands of the public> b : lacking feeling or tact <so insensitive as to laugh at someone in pain>

The president and Mayor Bloomberg and all of their NY Supporters on the mosque project are just plain insensitive. They are totally insensitive to the demands of the public. They totally lack feeling or tact. They are in effect so insensitive as to laugh at the pain of those who died in the 9/11 disaster and their surviving family and friends. They are so insensitive as to apologize to foreign leaders for the pain of those Americans who died during WWII trying to liberate Europe from a threat greater than the world had ever known…Hitler.

Mr. President and Mr. Bloomberg I must say this to you; I did not vote for either of you for my own personal reasons and that is OK. That is the American way. The candidates with the most electoral votes were put in office. But as leaders in the highest office in the land, you swore to uphold and protect the people of this land and the laws of this land. When will you stop being so insensitive to the demands of the public.

I have always believed and I always will that the only way to get a bad politician out of office is to support a good candidate and to do everything I can to support him and get him into office within the system. I promise you sir, that is exactly what I am dedicated to accomplishing;  the total removal from office (by only peaceful and legal means) of you and everyone whom you have placed in office outside the normal course of law. You sir disgrace this country and our forefathers. But, that will all change come election time. The American people are tired of being trod upon. They are tired of having no jobs and losing their homes as you vacation across the globe and laugh at them. It is so bad you cannot and will not even allow your wife to accompany you to Muslim nations – Shariah law. It is coming to an end sir. I take this opportunity to put you on public notice sir; We want patriotic freedom back. We want our country back! and we will accomplish this at the polls every November until we get it right!
